SO MANY REASONS TO CELEBRATE!
Firstly, a BIG congratulations to our Service Co-ordinator Shelley Smith. I mentioned last month that she was off to represent New Zealand in Table Tennis at the New Zealand Veteran Champs. She has done a fantastic job with a bronze medal in the over 40's teams and was part of the winning New Zealand team against Australia. This has secured Shelley a spot in the
NZ team to travel to the Australian Veteran Champs in October. Great work Shelley!
The team at Love Local are delighted to confirm the recommencement of delivery of our charitable bags to support the Bluff community. We would like to thank Tyron Strongman, the team at Bluff Bus Service and the Eagle Hotel for working with us to help make this happen.
May is also going to be a big month for Love Local, as we will celebrate our fifth birthday. We are proud to have been helping the Invercargill community for five years, so are holding a celebration. This will be a family friendly, community event - so please join us at The Pantry on Sunday 20 May, between 1-3pm. We are running a children’s colouring competition alongside this event. Love Local. This month we are catching up with Louise Duffy.
Where were you born? Wyndham
What are your hobbies? Dog agility, taking my daughter horse riding and following my partner’s musical endeavours.
What is something people are surprised to find out about you? As a young child, I had an imaginary friend.
What is your role at Love Local? Operations Manager
How long have you been involved? Three months (since Jan 2018)
What led you to be involved? I saw the role advertised on Facebook and it looked like a great organisation to be part of. Luckily for me, the interview process showed we were a great fit for each other.
What is the biggest challenge in being part of the Love Local team? Achieving all of our aspirational goals in a short time, with a small budget.
What is the most rewarding? Achieving all of our aspirational goals in a short time, with a small budget. It is also a great feeling to be able to apply my previous business experience to an organisation that is focused on improving outcomes for the community, rather than profit.
What is your favourite quote? “Not my circus, not my monkeys.” A Polish saying that is a great reminder to avoid unnecessary drama.

The Fab Four!
As we’ve had a bit of an Antarctic blast lately, I thought it would be a great time to discuss what you can eat to help keep the bugs at bay for you and your family over the cooler months. I present to you ‘the Fab Four’ - a few key nutrients that can lessen your chances of catching a cold or flu.
Vitamin C must be the first thing we all think of when we’re sick - plenty of fruit and vegetables! Your body doesn’t store vitamin C very well, which is why it is so important to eat your 5+ a day, each and every day. Including plenty of coloured fruit and vegetables in our diet is one of the best things you can do to prevent illness. These foods have antioxidants that are important for fighting infection.
Zinc is one of the most important nutrients for optimal immunity. To boost your zinc levels, you could increase your intake of lean meat, chicken and seafood and/or eat more healthy dairy products, eggs, nuts, seeds and leafy green vegetables.
Vitamin D is the sunshine vitamin. As the sun will be more scarce over the coming months, it pays to choose foods with vitamin D, such as dairy products or oily fish, like salmon and sardines. It may also pay to look into a vitamin D supplement.
Probiotics are important for our gut health. This plays a role in our overall health and immunity. Fermented foods like sauerkraut, kombucha and kefir can be good, but plain old natural yoghurt does the trick too!
So, when the shivers or sniffles start to arrive, I hope you’re reminded about ‘the Fab Four’ - giving health to your core and helping you do more!
