Where were you born? I was born in Auckland and moved to Southland in 2006.
What are your hobbies? Competitive Table Tennis, collecting everything and anything interesting, home renovating and classic cars.
What is something people are surprised to find out about you? When I was a teenager, my family entered the ‘Black Object’ competition with Radio Hauraki. We made a massive papier-mâché Gorilla that stood over 6 foot tall. We won a $25,000 jet boat for our efforts!
What is your role with Love Local? Part Time Service Co-Ordinator
How long have you been involved? Since January 2018
What led you to be involved? When I saw the Love Local role advertised, I did some research and instantly knew that I wanted to be a part of this wonderful team. I also have my own Mortgage Advising company in Invercargill (Shelley Smith Mortgages). My two roles go hand in hand as I know I can make a difference in people’s lives in more ways than one. Helping to put a roof over people’s heads, and providing affordable healthy food to my awesome community!
What is the biggest challenge in being part of the Love Local team? No challenges, just exciting opportunities waiting to happen!
What is the most rewarding? Being able to support local businesses and helping to choose the healthy produce that goes into the Love Local bags.
What is your favourite quote? “Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level, then they beat you with experience.”

Buying a Love Local bag is a great way of budgeting as you will know exactly how much you spend each week! With constantly fluctuating fruit & vegetable prices, we do the price control for you.
As you may already be aware, effective 28 March 2018 (for deliveries on 4 April) there will be a price increase as below:
Fruit bag: $11.50
Small bag: $19.50
Regular bag: $29.00
Large bag: $39.50
If you have an automatic payment set up, can you please amend your payments from 28th March. If you ever need to cancel an order, or put your order on hold over a holiday period, please let us know at least a week before your scheduled delivery date. As well as weekly orders, we also have fortnightly and monthly orders available.
GIVE A LITTLE – HELP A LOT!
As well as providing customers with healthy fruit and vegetable bags, Love Local collaborates with local charities such as the Red Cross.
Such partnerships enable us to provide fresh fruit and vegetables to people in need in our community. One such initiative is providing free fruit and vegetable bags to new refugee families to Invercargill.

The Healthier Choice
Healthy eating can be hard. Especially when there are a million messages flying at us from all directions about what we should be eating. And how. And when. And where. I thought this month I would share with you the “Healthier Choice” initiative I am currently working on. This is a small label for cafe owners to place next to food items that are healthier with the aim of making healthier eating easy. The key to this is in the word healthier. “Healthier” menu items may not necessarily tick all of the boxes of being the perfect food to eat for good health. However, the menu item may be slightly healthier in the way that it was cooked or the ingredients that were used. Being humans and eating everyday (hopefully!) means that the healthy changes we make to our eating and drinking do make a difference, but on the other hand can lead to weight creeping up on us!
In broad terms, when I look for healthier foods I am looking for more fruit and vegetables, more whole-grains, more nutrient rich foods, and less sugar, salt and fat.
· Choose a grainy bread.
· Swap from white to brown rice.
· Add an extra vegetable to the meal.
· Have a fruit based dessert or piece of baking.
· Use a little less oil when cooking (a good rule of thumb is 1 tsp per person.)
· Switch from coconut cream to coconut milk or a ‘lite’ version.
· Enjoy two pieces of chocolate instead of six.
· Have a small handful of plain nuts instead of a muesli bar.
· Halve the amount of muesli you usually serve yourself and use plain oats or Weetbix to make up the volume.
